FREEZING FATHERHOOD

Baby born using long-frozen sperm

Through frozen sperm, a man who became infertile after being treated for testicular cancer as a teenager has become a dad 21 years later. The live birth has been hailed as a new world record for the longest period of cryo-preservation, or freezing of sperm.

The man, then 17, reportedly froze five samples of sperm before undergoing surgery, radiation and chemotherapy between 1979 and 1981 to treat testicular cancer.

Two years ago, the sperm was thawed and used to fertilize his partner's eggs. A healthy baby boy was born in 2002 to the UK-based couple. The live birth provides proof that long-term freezing can successfully preserve sperm quality and fertility, notes researchers, who called for more follow-up studies.
